Line torch run route and support amazing athletes

| January 30, 2009 8:00 PM

Dear Bonner County Community,

We have a once in a lifetime opportunity today to witness the Special Olympics World Games Flame of Hope pass through our community.

The runners will start on the bike trail behind Jack in the Box at 3:50 p.m., run along the trail until it reaches the intersection of Olive and Highway 2. They will then head toward Lake Street, take a right and conclude at City Hall for a ceremony at 4:10 p.m..

Many people don't know much about the magnitude of Special Olympics World Games, or how incredible it is that they are held in our state in Boise this year, or what a privilege it is for us to be able to witness this flame as it tours our community.

The athletes competing in Boise in February train for years, they compete and must qualify for the Olympic Games.  It is the elite athletes who are invited to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals at the games.  It is on par with the Olympic Games held in China last summer.

By the time the flame reaches its final destination next month, it will have traveled more than 37,000 miles, across five continents and over a four-month time period.  Part of that journey is through our area.

The Flame of Hope is symbolic of what these games give not only to the athletes who compete, but to those who aspire to compete, and those of us who watch in wonderment as these Olympians do things we ourselves may not be able to do.

Please come out on this afternoon and line the route with the rest of the community. Wear your red, white and blue, bring a flag, a banner or a noisemaker, clap, and cheer.

Encourage your employees to head out for a little while, close your business for just a few minutes and celebrate this momentous occasion.

AMY LITTLE
