Culture celebrates rude, coarse behavior

| July 4, 2009 9:00 PM

I was deeply saddened — but not terribly surprised — by the report of disrespectful actions on the part of three students at the recent Sandpoint High School graduation.

In a culture that celebrates the rude, the coarse, and the vulgar, standards of public behavior plummet, and we shouldn’t be too shocked when our kids follow suit.

Nonetheless, these young men tried to make a mockery out of a ceremony that is meant to be a joyful celebration of our community’s youth at their best and brightest. I hope that the other graduates won’t let these boys’ behavior dim their own happy memories of that special day.
