Sally Sue (Miller) Pope, 67

Sally Sue (Miller) Pope, 67, passed away on June 1, 2009, at her home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Sally was born on March 19, 1942, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the first child of Kermit Whitney and Frances Wendle Miller. She spent her first four years at Raven Ranger Station in Montana. The family moved to Sandpoint in 1947.

Sally attended Washington Elementary, Sandpoint Junior High School, and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1960. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Her first year of college was at University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif. She transferred the following year to Idaho State College (Univer-sity). It was in Pocatello that Sally met and married Jerry Waltman; they were later divorced. Sally and Jerry had three children. Sally worked for Idaho State University for many years.

Sally was a great mother. She loved to camp and be outdoors. She was a lifeguard at Sandpoint City Beach during high school. As a lifeguard at a city pool in Denver, CO, she gave swimming lessons to members of the University of Denver faculty. She was a leader at a Girl Scout camp in Tacoma where she also taught girls in the art of canoeing. She instilled a love of the outdoors in her children. She also loved to read, crochet and knit. She was a football and baseball fan and watched her favorite teams on TV.

She moved to Moscow with her two younger children in 1984. Sally met Dave Pope in Moscow. They were married in 2000. Sally and Dave, along with her daughter, moved to Sandpoint. They lived in Sandpoint for about three years; then, moved to Coeu r d’Alene, where she worked for several years at J.C. Penney’s.

Sally is survived by her husband, David of Coeur d’Alene; son, Brad (Michelle) Waltman of Cortez, Colo.; daughter, Jennifer Troughton (Dan) of Nampa, Idaho; son, Mathew (Kathy) Waitman of Federal Way, Wash,; stepdaughter, Lindsey Pope of Moscow; 11 grandchildren: Danielle, Mikkel, Kolby, Ashley Jordan, Richard, Carly, Cole, Andrew, Alexa, Zoe; brother Jay (Cathy) Miller of Moscow; sister Linda (Ron) Hunt of Sandpoint; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on July 25, 2009, at Hope Cemetery in Hope, Idaho. Her cousin, the Rev. Mark Wendle, will be officiating.
