Let's come together and help animals

| July 13, 2009 9:00 PM

The Bonner Humane Society has closed its doors, but not its mission and hope. We’re trying to get the word out… and it’s working… we just need everyone to pitch in.

Recently, the Bee had a front-page article on the plight of the humane society, followed by news media coverage and we received overflowing empathy and astonishment that this could happen “here” and ‘what can we do’s?”

In that same day, on the ‘back’ page, the Panida was being congratulated for a $5,000 donation from our friends at Mountain West Bank. And indeed the Panida deserves it. This shows that people in the community still are supporting worthy causes in spite of the poor economy.

Right now, the Humane Society is in crisis and truly needs the support of the community.  They have managed on a shoestring for a very long time and now they need our help. They provide a very valuable service for our community and this is the first time I can remember them ever asking for this kind of help.  This is a worthy, viable and necessary cause! Necessary is the key word here. Without a low cost spay-neuter clinic — well, we all know the outcome. Imagine 6-12 months from now … numerous cats and dogs roaming s unvaccinated and unsprayed or neutered, the shelter overflowing even more than it is now.  I guarantee our community will start crying out then, and so will the animals.

We have been offered a challenge from a local neighbor who will donate $1,000 if we can get matches from 49 other individuals or sources.

This does not mean that is the ‘minimum’ donation required … it means if we can get the community to band together for this Sandpoint icon and needed entity — we can come back!

It indeed takes a village.
