SPIRIT LAKE — No injuries were reported after a fire swept through a home north of town on Monday night.

The structure at 2656 Clagstone Road was a total loss, said Spirit Lake Fire District Fire Marshal Wayne Nowacki.

“By the time we got there, it was fully involved. The roof had already started to collapse,” Nowacki said.

The home’s occupants were tending to equipment elsewhere on the property when the fire broke out. Nowacki said the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Nowacki said the fire was largely confined to the structure, a single-story, modified mobile home. The residents have insurance, he said.

Firefighters from the Timberlake and Northern Lakes fire districts also responded to the 8:15 p.m. fire call.

At least four water tenders were used to douse the blaze, Nowacki said.

The emergency call was initially routed to Bonner Dispatch then relayed to Kootenai County dispatchers. Nowacki confirmed reports there was some initial misdirection because of an incorrect address, but did not know who made the mistake.

An additional digit on the address put the fire firmly in Kootenai County, but the correct address was actually in Bonner County. However, Nowacki doubts the confusion kept the home from being saved.

“In reality, it probably wouldn’t have made any difference,” he said.
