Stephen D. Carter, 65

Stephen D. Carter, 65, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009, surrounded by his family, at Lewiston Rehabilitation and Care Center.

He was born May 12, 1944, at Greenville, Maine, the son of Wilbur and Florence Marsh Carter. The family moved to Sandpoint, Idaho, in 1957, where he graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1962. He later attended and graduated from Lewis-Clark State College at Lewiston in 1969.

Steve married Alta D. Neyman at Wrangell, Alaska, Sept. 3, 1966. They moved to Lewiston, where they resided for 43 years.

He worked in the woods and for lumber mills in Idaho and Montana, and on a pile-driver, in a cold-storage plant and on a fishing tender in Alaska. He also worked as a summer mechanic for Twin City Foods at Lewiston and taught elementary school for the Lewiston School District from 1969 until he retired in 2003.

He had been a member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge, the National Street Rod Association and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association.

Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed team roping, street rodding, camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, welding, woodworking, reading, gardening, and spending time with friends, family and his two granddaughters.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Alta Carter of Lewiston; his sons, Tyson C. Carter and wife Brandi of Nampa, and Nicholas J. Carter and wife Jill of Canby, Ore.; his granddaughters, Katelyn and Gracie; his brothers, Chip Carter of Otis Orchards, Wash., and Bruce and wife Bunni Carter of Spokane; his sisters, Nancy and husband Harry Kimball of Seattle, Alice and Lloyd Wallace of Hope, Idaho, and Judy Kaiser of Seattle; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful dog Tipper.

A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston, with the Rev. Steven Taulbee officiating.
