ATHOL — The SISNA Mountain Bike Series wrapped up Wednesday night at Thimbleberry Group Camp in Farragut State Park, with 161 riders finishing 311 laps of the 12.65 mile course for a grand total of 3,934 miles biked.

“That’s alot better than sitting on your behind watching the news on Wednesday night,” said Ken Barrett, organizer of this mini-mountain bike festival.

Having completed its ninth season, Barrett is already planning out next year’s SISNA event, which should include some cool additions, like bike mechanics races.

This fun-based, four-week mountain bike series was held each Wednesday night in Idaho’s largest state park, allowing participants to ride a marked course at their own time and speed. As many people tried to improve on their times over the course of the month, many were just riding for the sake of bettering their novice skills and improving their fitness levels.

The husband and wife duo of Doug and Erica Krumpelman, of Coeur d’Alene, finished the entire series with lap times under 50 minutes, winning the men’s and women’s overall titles with times of 2:33.20 and 2:37.00, respectively.

Barrett, once a kid himself, would lead a different kid’s ride each evening. He said watching the little ones chase after him couldn’t have been any more fun. It’s Barrett’s hope that the children grasp onto their bikes for life when they experience being surrounded by more than 100 people enjoying the sport.
