Removing students' art is akin to vandalism

| June 1, 2009 9:00 PM

As a graduate from the class of 2000, I was appalled to hear that the school board and Ms. Kiebert wish to deny the current senior class the “right of passage,” as it were, to paint a mural in the halls of SHS.

Not only are the administrators taking away this opportunity to leave a piece of class history, they are going to paint over the existing murals.

Why would one do such a thing? In my mind this is vandalism upon a piece of art left behind from a former class.

These murals that have been painted are not just some senseless paint splatters left by some out of control children.  There was thought and planning behind each one.  Some depict the challenges faced by the class, others hold tribute to members of the class that lost their lives.  I am now a grown woman with children of my own.  One day I hoped to show my kids the mark my class left behind.  Shame on you, administrators for taking away such a gift.
