Chamber backs proposed center

SANDPOINT — The proposed 225,000 square foot community center has the support of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, representing over 550 businesses in the area.

“We need some anchors and draws for downtown,” said Clif Warren, the chamber’s government affairs chairman.  This investment would provide “economic redevelopment of downtown” and future business growth, he said.

The Jamie Packer Centre would be a $30 to $40 million investment in the downtown corridor with mixed use and contemporary urban planning including an indoor ice rink, 135,000 square feet of commercial and residential spaces, a 90,000-square-foot parking garage, and preserve historical landmarks.

“Adding an ice rink will not only fully round out our winter sports opportunities, but will provide yet another wonderful tourism draw to our beautiful community,” said Amy Little, executive director for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.  “The project fits in nicely with the recently adopted comprehensive plan that will promote a vibrant and active downtown, making Sandpoint a great place to work, live and visit.”

After passing through the Planning Commission, local developer Bruce Pedersen will go before the Sandpoint City Council on June 17 to request to rezone the property from Residential B to Residential C, among other requests.
