Local cyclists tame Rails to Resort climb

SANDPOINT — Saturday’s Rails to Resort ride, also known as the Schweitzer Hill Climb, boasted its biggest turnout ever, with 52 bicyclists and one unicyclist riding from the base of Schweitzer all the way up to the village.

Coeur d’Alene’s Cameron York edged Sandpoint’s Bill McPherson to the top by just four seconds to win the overall road bike race, clocking a 42:08 amid excellent cycling conditions. Robert Funk won the mountain bike dirt category in 1:01.24, Jamie Emmer won the Mountain bike road category in 58.31, and Emily Roser won the women’s road bike class with a time of 51:26.

Local Justin Henney may have accomplished the most impressive feat, taming the climb on a unicycle in just 1:08. One rider rode with a trailer, carrying none other than his dog. Participants met afterward at Pucci’s for beer, lunch, swag and awards.

The fall hillclimb for this series will be held on Sept. 12. This will be the grandaddy with major swag and awards for the whole series. Also, mark your calendar for Aug. 22, which will be the 3rd annual Round the Lake Ride, 100 mile ride that circles Lake Pend Oreille.
