Board needs to consider changing date of fair

| June 15, 2009 9:00 PM

I’d like to make a request. Although it is likely to late for this year, that the Bonner County Fair board consider moving the time of the fair from the starting time of approximately Aug. 18-20,  to no sooner than the weekend before Labor Day or even the weekend after Labor day based on the calendar of that particular year.

While I understand that the horses and 4-H are a large part of the fair,  there are other interests that should be given more consideration. In particular, growers and canners. I have in the past won the blue ribbon for canning dill pickles, but have not been entering the last couple of years as often cucumbers are just becoming available when you have to take your entries out. Also, the  local produce exhibited seems to be less than mature, green, etc.

A 10- to 14-day delay in the start would also make if feel like the old days I remember as a kid when the original fairgrounds were where Lakeview Park is now. Somehow, the present high-summer heat just doesn’t feel right.

Another welcome addition would be to perhaps bring a carnival to town and maybe provide several games, bumpercars, or the like. I hope these ideas are seriously considered by the board. Thank you.
