Six Rivers hosts community day

| June 15, 2009 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Six Rivers Market, the area’s new online local food cooperative, is hosting a community day Wednesday.

The event, which takes place from 3:30-6 p.m., will offer samples from some of the market’s 26 producers, a kids’ activity table and information about the market and other area non-profits. It is held at the Sandpoint Business & Events Center at Pine and Euclid.

Community day events will take place the third Wednesday of each month.

This month’s event will highlight two Six Rivers Market producers, Tracy Moore from Bee Kissable and Three Bee Honey and Paula Rice from Beehaven Farm. Tracy Moore will be hosting the kids’ activity table with hands-on activities and information about bees. Paula Rice will demonstrate how to buy cut flowers and care for them in your home. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun and take home a few free treasures.

Local non-profits will also have informational displays about what they offer the community. All area non-profits are invited to participate.

Visitors will also get a glimpse of the market’s weekly delivery and can learn more about how the market works.

Visitors will have the chance to see the market’s latest offerings: eggs, tofu, free-range meat, greens, herb and veggie starts, and of course, honey and incredibly beautiful flowers.

For this week only, the market will take place on the second floor of the Sandpoint Events Center instead of the gymnasium.

Six Rivers will host Community Days on the third Wednesday of the month, every month throughout the year, from 3:30-6 p.m. at the Sandpoint Events Center.

Six Rivers Market is a Web-based local food cooperative.

Its online store front is open every weekend from Saturday, 8 a.m., until Monday at 5 p.m.

All available local products are listed on the Web site on a weekly basis.

Meadow Summers developed the idea for Six Rivers Market while taking a sustainable agriculture course. She wanted a place to buy local products year round, including meat and baked goods.

By adapting software developed for the Oklahoma Food Cooperative, she and a dedicated group of volunteers realized her dream when the market opened for business on April 3.
