Lawrence 'Larry' Hubert Gunn

| June 18, 2009 9:00 PM

Lawrence “Larry” Hubert Gunn passed away June 11, 2009, at the age of 77, in Sandpoint, Idaho.  He was born in Los Angeles on November 22, 1932, to Wilfred and Lucille Gunn.  In 2006, he moved with his wife to Sandpoint, Idaho, to be near his children.

He was married to Monica Millar Gunn for 52 years until her death in 2007.  He is survived by his children, Kevin (Christine) Gunn, of Lynnwood, Washington, Teryl Gunn (Sean) Riley, of Bothell, Washington, and Brenna Gunn (Drew) Meredith, of Sandpoint, Idaho; his grandchildren, Aaron, Ben and Corey Gunn, Derick and Lauren Riley, and Max, Zoe, and Mya Meredith.  He is also survived by his sister Marlene (Walter) Estelle, of Spokane, Wa, and his sister-in-laws, Melanie Brown, of Montrose, Anne Windsor, of La Crescenta, and Marilyn Sund, of San Jose, and many nieces and nephews.

He attended Montrose Elementary School, Clark Junior High School, Glendale High School, and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  He was an architect, artist, and self-employed businessman, designer with Larwin developers, and was executive and co-owner of Pestcon.

A longtime member and vestryman of St. Luke’s of the Mountains church, he was instrumental in the remodel design of this La Crescenta landmark, keeping it true to the original and historical design.  The altar, the cross, the Parish Hall prayer room, the parking lot and the outside prayer garden were specifically his unique design and reflect his artistry.

He was very active in the Episcopal Cursillo and Soma ministries.  He also served on the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity Board.  His traveling abroad for work, ministry, and pleasure included trips to China, Taiwan, Australia, Uganda, Kenya, England, Ireland, Scotland, Nova Scotia, Canada, Israel, and Jordan.

Besides his architecture and art that live on in numerous local buildings and homes, he will be remembered as a faithful husband, father, grandfather, family member; a loyal friend to so many; and a compassionate man of good character who did his best to reflect the grace of God to others. Many friends and family will fondly remember enjoying his unique and original culinary presentations while sitting around a firepit, surrounded by his artistic, self-designed backyard garden.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s of the Mountains Anglican Church in La Crescenta, on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.  Another service will be held in Sandpoint, Idaho, in the month of July.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Larry to:  St. Luke’s Anglican Church Reestablishment Fund, P. O. Box 8307, La Crescenta, CA 91224,  or to San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity, 400 So. Irwindale Ave., Azusa, CA, 91702.
