SANDPOINT — A Careywood woman was arrested Sunday after allegedly shooting her husband in the abdomen with rifle.

Roberta Jean Manson-Thompson is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Guy Vernon Manson, 54, was listed in fair condition at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene on Monday, said hospital spokeswoman Paula Davenport.

The shooting occurred at the couple’s home on Lazy Spade Lane at about 1:30 p.m. It happened to be Roberta Manson-Thompson’s birthday, according to the court records.

Charging papers identify the weapon used in the crime as a .22-caliber long rifle.

Bonner County Deputy Prosecutor Valerie Fenton sought $100,000 bail for Manson-Thompson, a request which was approved by Judge Barbara Buchanan on Monday.

Buchanan also appointed a public defender to represent Manson-Thompson and barred her from having contact with her husband.

A preliminary hearing is pending in the magistrate division of 1st District Court.

Manson-Thompson, 46, was charged domestic battery against her husband in 2007, but the state later moved to dismiss the misdemeanor charge due to insufficient evidence, court records indicate.
