Spartans advance

MERIDIAN — Jake Weimer posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards, Eric Holbrook added 13 points, and the Spartans needed every one of them to edge Filer 50-49 in the opening round of the 3A boys basketball tournament at Meridian High School.

Max Salesky added eight and Tyler Douglas seven for the Spartans (19-1), who face Shelley (14-11) today in the second round, with the winner advancing to the finals on Saturday. The game will be carried live on 106.7, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
