SANDPOINT — A trio of Sandpoint senior football players were recently picked to participate in the 2009 Idaho High School All-Star football game, which will be held June 20 at Holt Arena, in Pocatello.

Quarterback Jake Semones, linebacker Coleman Frank and lineman Spencer McCartney were selected to participate in a game featuring the state’s top seniors. Head coach Mike Mitchell is pleased that three of his players were picked.

“It’s the first time in a while that we’ve had kids selected for this game,” said Mitchell. “We’re all really excited they get to play.”

Semones had some eye-popping numbers this year, with more than 2,400 yards passing and 22 touchdowns. The slick left-hander with pinpoint accuracy hopes to play football at Yale in the future, where his father Doug is now coaching the linebackers.

“The other quarterback on his team is going to Stanford,” said Mitchell of Highland’s Tayson Hill, the Idaho Gatorade state player of the year. “Two quarterbacks on the same team; one going to Yale, and one to Stanford. They should be able to learn the offense.”

McCartney, at 6-1 and 230 pounds, had a big impact on both the offensive and defensive lines this season. Frank, a middle linebacker, was one of the Bulldogs’ top tacklers. Mitchell had high praise for the play of Frank.

“He was an outstanding middle linebacker for us; played solid all year,” said Mitchell. “I’m tickled to see him get a chance to play in a game like this.”
