Bengals trounce Bulldogs
LEWISTON — The Bulldogs baseball players had two things working against them Friday afternoon in their season opener down in Lewiston.
One, it was the first time all season they’ve ventured outside of the cozy confines of Les Rogers Court, where they’ve spent the first two weeks of the season hitting in a cage and taking grounders on a gym floor.
And secondly, they had to face perennial state power Lewiston, which has been practicing outdoors for the last couple weeks.
Not surprisingly, Lewiston got the better end of the deal, winning 18-0 during the first game of the Lewiston Tournament.
“It was definitely good for the boys to get out there on the dirt,” said first year coach Chris Young of the Bulldogs. “The boys stayed positive and didn’t hang their heads, and there were definitely some positives.”
Ben Fisher and Jordan Hammack each had two hits, and the Bulldogs (0-1) banged out eight as a team. Neither team committed an error, which was a bit of surprise this early in the season.
Ultimately, two bad innings proved the difference, as Lewiston scored 16 runs in the second and third innings to blow the game open. Lewiston managed only four more hits than Sandpoint, but capitalized on some walks.
Cole Tonnemacher pitched the first two innings, before being relieved by Jordan Hammack, as each threw off a real mound for the first time this year. Young was pleased with the way Charvoz battle in a tough situation.
Sandpoint continues the tournament today with two games.
