We need to support governor's road plan

| March 18, 2009 9:00 PM

If you are travelling on Highway 2 between Oldtown and Sandpoint and are wondering why trucks are going 35 mph let me explain. The Idaho Transportation Department does not have sufficient budget funds to adequately maintain the state’s billion dollar investment in transportation infrastructure . Therefore it must control speed in hopes that the road will not breakup and create work it has insufficient funds to repair.

This creates traffic bottlenecks, safety concerns as impatient people attempt to pass where they should not, increased costs/delays to businesses impacted by longer delivery times and the list goes on.

This speed control mechanism is likely to spread to other roads throughout the state( it is worth noting the same road in Washington and Montana has no similar restrictions . I wonder how competitive that makes some of our Idaho products.)

Gov. Butch Otter has a comprehensive strategy to address these transportation issues throughout the state. He and his staff spent all summer/fall travelling our state to gather citizen input on the causes and cures for these problems.

Please contact your local legislators and ask them to support the bold and necessary legislation proposed by the governor. If we do not support his leadership, our roads and infrastructure investment will continue to deteriorate.
