Dogs just want to have fun and help others

| March 23, 2009 9:00 PM

Responding to Steve Barton’s criticism of the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office attempt to unify search and rescue, I applaud officials for its effort.

Our county has been plagued by antagonism between groups for years and it’s time to drop the personality conflicts. Maintaining conflicts disgraces the reputation of SAR and prevents qualified people from joining.

I was dog training coordinator for NISAR for two years; now a member of Bonner County Search and Rescue, and Search Dog North Idaho Inc. Mr. Barton’s view is inconsistent with my experience but criticism is counterproductive. Since joining BCSAR I’ve heard no negative comments against NISAR.

The sheriff’s office is attempting to determine the skills of each group to use according to their ability without favoritism. Dealing with the sheriff’s office on behalf of SDNI, I found them available, open, and willing to observe us first hand to see what we and our dogs can bring to a search. This is a mature, responsible service our community.

I suggest everyone interested in SAR attend meetings of each group and decide yourself which to join. I suggest all SAR groups drop the politics and train; together if possible. Thank you Sheriff Wheeler and staff for your patience and attempt to get SAR organized.

Anyone interested in search and rescue can find a calendar listing meetings and all SAR groups in the area at searchdognorthidaho.net.

You must register to access the calendar. SDNI holds free dog obedience/agility training Tuesdays, and search training Sundays, open to the public and all SAR people. People without dogs are encouraged to come. Search and Rescue is a good thing to do. Dogs just want to have fun.
