| March 23, 2009 9:00 PM

SPOKANE — Walker Watson finished second in the shot put (50-6) and discus (137-4), Zach Kuhl finished second in the high jump (5-8) and Corey Hoffman third (5-6), and Josh Kopsa grabbed a third in the 400 (54.40) to lead the Sandpoint boys to a fifth place finish Saturday in the team’s first meet at West Valley.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had a sophomore throw 50 feet” said Sandpoint coach Dave DeMers of Watson. “He’s got unlimited potential, and we’re excited about that.”

Kopsa, Ray Lee, Brandon Hawkins and David Marienau teamed up to grab a third in the 1,600 relay, clocking a 3:49. Kevin Pfeifer was just under five minutes in the 1,600 (4:59) and Marienau was close behind (5:02). Ray Lee clocked a personal best in the 300 hurdles (44.8) and Brandon Hawkins posted a personal best in the 800 (2:12).

DeMers took only seven girls to the meet, with Kelly Adams finishing second in the high jump (4-9), and Adrianna Bucholtz third in the discus (96-7) to lead the Bulldog placers.

Sandpoint is at the Christina Finney Invitational in Post Falls on Thursday.

n Sandpoint suffers tough-luck loss to Bears after tie erased by rainout

MOSCOW — It will go down in the books as a 6-4 win for Moscow over 4A rival Sandpoint, but that wasn’t necessarily the case Saturday night in a game moved south to Lewiston.

With Moscow leading 6-4 heading into the top of the 7th inning, Sandpoint responded by scoring two runs to tie the game. With Moscow due up in the bottom half of the inning and amid a steady downpour, the umpires decided to call the game.

By rule, the score of the last completed inning becomes official, and at the end of the 6th inning Moscow held a 6-4 lead.

“It’s definitely tough to lose like that,” said coach Chris Young, whose team was supposed to play a double-header, but due to a scheduling conflict, had to wait three hours to play just one late game. “All of the momentum was heading in our direction. The kids were down two times, and came back; it showed me a lot”

Cole Tonnemacher crushed a three-run homer to lead Sandpoint’s offense, which scored all four of its runs on just five hits.

“It was a healthy shot,” said Young of his left handed slugger’s homer. “Through the wind and the rain and over the wall.”

Ben Fisher had another strong performance on the mound, striking out 10 Bears, but was saddled with the hard-luck loss. He now has 26 strikeouts in his first two starts.

Sandpoint (2-2) heads back down to Lewiston today, for an IEL double-header against the Bengals, one of the top teams in the state.
