Bulldogs drop opener to Hawks

| May 4, 2009 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Jamie Klopatek threw a five hit shutout, striking out nine, and Lakeland capitalized on five Sandpoint errors to post a 9-0 win Monday in the 4A Region 1 softball playoff opener at Travers Park.

Alyana Watson and Alexis Jacobson each had two of Lakeland’s eight hits, and Alisha Watson hit a triple, one of two balls that she crushed on the day, as the Hawks (14-10) scored in all but two innings.

“We got on it offensively and worked well as a team to back Jamie up,” said Hawks coach Colleen Bevacqua. “She (Jamie) had her rise ball working today.”

Molly Givens went the distance on the mound for Sandpoint (2-17), holding the Hawks to eight hits and allowing no earned runs. C.J Semones had a couple of sparkling plays at shortstop in the loss, but the Bulldogs could only manage five hits on the day.

Sandpoint will await the loser of today’s game between Moscow and Lakeland, and will play a loser-out game on Wednesday. If Moscow wins, the Bulldogs host Lakeland. If Lakeland wins, Sandpoint travels to Moscow.
