Let's make Jacey's Race bigger than Bloomsday

| May 6, 2009 9:00 PM

Wouldn’t it be great if this year’s Jacey’s Race became North Idaho’s equivalent of Bloomsday?

In just two years, Jacey’s Race has raised nearly $16,000 to help local families fight life-threatening diseases. Proceeds from the races have also been given to the Spokane Ronald McDonald House, Wishing Star and the pediatric department of Bonner General Hospital. This year, money will go to the local Wishing Star, Community Cancer Services and the BGH pediatric department once again.

Wouldn’t it be something to see every healthy Bonner and Boundary county resident come out on July  12 to support Jacey’s Race?

Jacey’s Race really isn’t a race, it has more of a small-town carnival feeling with an underlying theme that you are helping someone else out. There are clowns, balloons, pony rides, dunk tanks and other games for kids as well as treats for everyone.

Ronald and Nanci Jenkins started Jacey’s race years ago to give back to their community and to raise awareness about childhood illness. Daughter Jaycee has been cancer free for eight years and does an awesome job as race ambassador.

I couldn’t help but think as I lined up with the rest of the Bloomies on Monday for the annual photograph, how great it would be to have the community all wearing Jacey’s Race T-shirts on Monday, July 13.

It would feel good knowing we helped local families and came together as a community once again.
