Bicyclists, drivers both need to exercise caution

| May 11, 2009 9:00 PM

Beware, bike season is here. Watch side streets for bicyclists that do not stop for stop signs. Beware for bicyclists who are following the rules of the road because their size is small. Especially the lady on the 10 speed entering Pine Atreet from the south.

If I had not swerved into the westbound lane (no traffic) and given her my lane at 20 mph, the safety gear would have been a mess.

The drivers’ regulation handbook published by the state of Idaho is available at the Bonner County Driver’s License office; read the section for bicycles.

You must stop as cars have to at stop signs. If you must cut across lanes, use hand signals. Both car drivers and bicyclists must always think safety.

Young riders need a safety class (Bike Rodeo) that most Fire Stations present. But, most of all, Parents must talk to their children about safety. Remember car drivers, that young biker rider could be yours.

Bike-Car accidents should always be treated the same as car-car accidents — call 911.

To let the drivers and riders in Sandpoint know, the riders and drivers in the San Jose, Calif., are the same way, they do not think before doing what the action can cause.

To drivers who put their cell phone up to their ears, send text messages, drop things on the floor and reach to pick them up and other strange things while driving — stop it, you cause more than 80 percent of the accidents
