Bulldogs in the hunt for state title
SANDPOINT — Rare is the season where tennis and state championship are mentioned in the same sentence in North Idaho, but buoyed by a wealth of tennis talent and a coach who is confident in his players, such is the case for Sandpoint as the 2009 4A state tennis championships get underway today in Boise.
“My goal is still the same,” said Bulldogs head coach Kent Anderson, echoing the same sentiment he shared at the start of the season. “I think we can win state.”
Part of Anderson’s optimism comes from three of his entrants coming into the tournament as high seeds, which in theory could mean more favorable first round draws. Freshman Kevin Kirby is the No. 1 seed in the 16 player boys singles bracket, Piper Wahlin and Abby Helander are seeded No. 4 in girls doubles, and Mikka Nostdahl and Dustin Pierce No. 4 in boys doubles.
Kirby has been a big surprise in singles, and both doubles teams have the athleticism to be competitive against anyone. Each team stands a solid chance to contend for a state trophy.
“We could do damage just by our seeds,” explained Anderson, noting weather prevents his team from logging as much court time as some of the competitors they’ll face. “I’m worried about some of the guys from the south, that play all year.”
Senior Ben Hardy, who lost to Kirby in three sets at districts could be a wild card in the boys singles, possessing a big serve that could help him win some matches. Rob Carne and Jackson Bussard round out the Sandpoint contingent in boys doubles.
The championship rounds will be Saturday, at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
