Committee seeks waste site alternatives
As those of you who drive up Peninsula Road may have noticed, the roadside signs protesting Bonner County’s plans to locate a solid waste transfer station at 1230 Peninsula Road have been retired.
The newly formed Citizen’s Committee is hard at work studying alternative locations, and as a member of the committee I feel we are all in agreement that the new site should not be near homes, regardless of where it ultimately ends up being built.
Since this consensus resolves the fears we have lived with since January, of a solid waste transfer station being built in our neighborhood, the neighborhood agrees that the signs have done their job of focusing attention on this important problem, and are no longer needed to “make the point.”
There are several excellent alternatives in the area, which would allow the vounty to create a good long-term solution with plenty of room for recycling, large items, and one that is back off the road far enough to be effectively screened from view.
For those who would like to see the committee process in action, we will be having our next public committee meeting with a representative from the Idaho Department of Lands on Thursday, May 28, 3 p.m. at the Priest River Senior Center, 339 Jackson Ave.
This meeting will be to discuss the potential for locating the new solid waste transfer station on state lands in the area, and we encourage everyone to attend.
