Drivers need to yield to bicyclists in their lane

| May 27, 2009 9:00 PM

Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to Ms. Demko, who was hit while riding her bike on Sagle Road.

I have ridden all over Bonner County and in several cities and towns around the country. The drivers on Sagle Road are the worst in the county, from a bike rider’s perspective. Idaho law treats a bike rider just like a horse, tractor, or other conveyance. If there is a bike rider in your lane, it is your responsibility to first yield to oncoming traffic, then go around the biker — just like you would for any other vehicle you were overtaking.

Drivers on Sagle Road are always to impatient to wait for oncoming traffic to clear, and as a result try to squeeze by cyclists in an unsafe manner.

We need to protect bike riders on Sagle Road. No one should get hurt doing something so enjoyable. We need to get some sheriff’s deputies riding the loop to see what it’s like.

Slow down and go around the biker. It is the law.
