Naples man dies in jump from train
BONNERS FERRY — A Naples man was killed early Wednesday morning after jumping from a moving freight train he had illegally hitched a ride on, Boundary County Sheriff’s officials say.
The body of Dustin Dodge, 25, was found alongside the railroad tracks south of the city at about 5 a.m., after it was spotted by BNSF Railway personnel.
Sheriff’s deputies said Dodge and Jebediah Burney, 19, boarded the freight train in Naples intending to ride it north to the Deep Creek area. When the train passed their destination without slowing, the two leapt from it.
The train was traveling an estimated 40-45 mph, sheriff’s officials said.
Dodge died at the scene from injuries he sustained when he struck the ground.
Burney suffered injuries which were not life-threatening and was later located at the home of an acquaintance, according to the Boundary County Sheriff’s Office.
Burney did not seek medical treatment and no criminal charges were being pursued, sheriff’s officials said.
