Knights win division

| November 6, 2009 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Closing out the season with a three-game win streak, the Sandpoint Knights Jr. Tackle team won a division championship.

The last game was a close one from the start, with Nine mile scoring first. The knights matched with a drive of their own, capped by a touchdown run from Dylan Hancock in the first half.

The same thing happened again in the second half, but the Nine Mile kicker missed the extra point and Sandpoint kicker Travis Davis split the uprights, for a two point lead. Late in the fourth quarter, Nine Mile had a first and goal with two minutes and thirty seven seconds in the fourth period and a chance to take the lead.

The Knights got two key stops in the backfield by Patrick Kummer and two gang tackles from the defense to stop Nine Mile from scoring, preserving the 15-13 win.

It was a job well done by both the offense and defense for the victory and a fine finish for the season.

“They gave us a lot of problems,” Fresno State coach Pat Hill said. “We played very well to win the game in the end.”

Mathews ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns against Utah State, including the game-winner.

One more win would make the Bulldogs bowl eligible for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
