Irene LaRue Sundquist, 70

Irene LaRue Sundquist, 70, passed away in the company of family on Nov. 6, 2009, after a battle with cancer. She was a very important part of her family and community who spread joy with her compassion and contagious smile.

The vigil/rosary service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, in St Joseph’s Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov 12, 2009, in St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Father Dennis C. Day will officiate with interment following in Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Irene was born on May 30, 1939, in Edgerton, Kan., the daughter of Alpha and Dorothy Elrod. She spent her childhood in Edgerton, Kan., where she was valedictorian of her high school class as well as being active in sports and civic clubs. She married Gordon “Doc” Sundquist in Rhode Island in 1964 and they moved to Sandpoint in 1968.

Irene spent much of her life contributing to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint. She started the soup kitchen program more than 20 years ago. She was the religious education coordinator for the CCD program and an integral part of the first communion program for more than 30 years. She will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years Gordon “Doc” Sundquist; a brother, Charles Elrod of Pittsburgh , Kan.; a sister, Judy Gillette of Olathe, Kan.; a brother, Roger Elrod of Pomona, Kan.; children, Christopher Sundquist of Sandpoint; Lisa (Brandon) Gates, of Sandpoint; Randy (Florence) Sundquist of Ranchester, Wyo.; Pammy Jo (Rex) Shandy of Freemond, Mo.; grandchildren, Cody, Cory, Brian, Aaron, Calvin, Sarah, Brytani, Jorgi, Brandon, Jennifer, Suzanne, and Jacob; and great-grandchildren, Neci, Naomi, Noah, Houston, Liam, and Vincent.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
