Patricia Anne 'Patsy' Bacon, 85
Patricia Anne “Patsy” Bacon, 85, beloved spouse, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother, passed away on Nov. 6, 2009, in Spokane, Wash.
She was born Jan. 31, 1924, in Spokane. She was the third of four daughters of Winfield Scott Stinson Jones and Edith Kemp Jones. The girls were known as the “Jones Girls” for their strong and playful personalities. Patsy graduated from Roosevelt School and Lewis and Clark High School. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at the University of Washington.
On June 7, 1947, she married H. William Bacon, who became president and CEO of the Crescent Department Stores, the Spokane division of Marshall Field & Co. Patsy and Bill celebrated 40 years of marriage before his death in 1988.
They had a special bond and together loved boating and fishing on their 1963 Lyman wooden boat and drift boat in Idaho, Montana and British Columbia. They also skied the mountains of eastern Washington and were among the first skiers at Schweitzer Mountain. They shared many great adventures with family and friends in Spokane, North Idaho and Mexico.
Patsy served as president of the Rockwood Garden Club and as secretary of the Bishop’s Guild of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral and the Junior League of Spokane. She was also a long-time board member of the Educational Loan Foundation and member of the Spokane Club. She was a supporter of the Festival at Sandpoint and the Schweitzer Chapel.
In 1992 she married Bruce H. McPhaden of Spokane. He was a past regional vice president at Kaiser Aluminum. They enjoyed entertaining and travel before he passed away in 1998. Patsy treasured her time at the family lake cabin on Lake Pend Oreille.
Her hobbies were ceramics, collecting pigs, needlepoint, fly fishing and gardening, especially raspberries. She was an accomplished cook and loved playing mahjong and bridge with her long-time friends.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Bill; and by daughter, Gloria Susan, who died unexpectedly in 1972, five days before her wedding day. Her sister, Betty May Lally (Jack) and sister-in-law, Virginia Bacon Roberts (William) also preceded her in death. Her grandparents Arthur D. Jones and Aida M. Jones established the first real estate brokerage company in Spokane. Her family history in the U.S. extended prior to the American Revolution on the Kemp side.
She is survived by daughter, Anne Bacon Wagstaff (Peter) of Hayden Lake, Idaho; grandchildren, Jackson William Wagstaff (Trista) of Seattle, Wash., and Tyler Bacon Wagstaff (fiancee Amber) of Kalispell, Mont.; sisters, Milaine McGoldrick (James P), and Gloria Betts (Ray) of Spokane; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 3:30 p.m. Patsy loved pink, so wear a little pink for her. Private inurnment will be at the family plot at Lakeview Cemetery on Lake Pend Oreille in Sandpoint, Idaho.
