Let's help everyone have a happy Thanksgiving

| November 16, 2009 8:00 PM

If you doubt there are many folks hungry in Bonner County, stop off at the Bonner Community Food Center.

I’m fortunate that I’ve been adopted by the Piatt-Keyes-Mitton clan for holidays and celebrations and don’t need to worry about what I’m going to do for the holiday, much less whether I’m going to have anything to eat.

Instead, Thanksgiving is a time of celebration of family and gratitude for the many blessings we all have.

Because I have someplace to go and know that I’ll have some of the best food in North Idaho, I figured the least I could do was to buy a turkey so someone else could have a chance for the same kind of Thanksgiving that I will get to enjoy.

As I walked in the door, there were several people packing the small lobby, including a young woman and her small child. Before I left, a few more folks had arrived seeking help.

“This is only my second time here and I was doing everything I could not to have to come here,” she was telling the volunteer at the front desk.

The volunteer was wonderful — she made the young mother feel welcome and made sure she was taken care of for Thanksgiving.

Please consider buying a turkey and donating it to the food bank. I can guarantee you will gain as much from the experience as those who are in need of help during these tough economic times.

For more information on how to donate, call the food bank at 263-3663.
