LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Former Sandpoint and collegiate wrestling legend Jake Rosholt lost in the first round to Kendall Grove Saturday night at UFC 106 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Rosholt (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) utilized his grappling prowess to dominate the fight early, slamming Grove to the mat twice while also landing a hard left hand and impressive knee strike. Just when it seemed Rosholt had the fight going in his favor, Grove (11-6 MMA, 6-3 UFC) was able to quickly turn the tide with a jiu-jitsu submission.

Working from his back, the tall and skinny Grove utilized a momentary pause in the assault from Rosholt to swing his long legs quickly into position for a triangle choke of Rosholt’s head and arm, much like the old   scissor leg lock in wrestling. Rosholt quickly tapped out and seemed stunned and disappointed by what had just happened.

Rosholt, a member of Team Takedown, fell to 1-2 in the octagon after coming into the UFC with a perfect 5-0 mark. His plan was to take Grove to the mat and utilize a ground-and-pound approach. Much like his other loss to Dan Miller, Rosholt ultimately got caught in a bad position, and will no doubt learn from the defeat in future fights.

“The triangle, that’s my thing,” Grove said in an interview after the fight. “Ever since I started jiu-jitsu, with my long legs.”
