SANDPOINT — A Sandpoint man with ties to a fatal shooting in Sagle was arrested Monday on allegations he threatened his girlfriend with a pistol during a domestic dispute.

Ian James Freir is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery, false imprisonment, destruction of a telecommunications device and two counts of unlawful entry, according to court documents.

Freir made an initial appearance Tuesday. Judge Debra Heise set Freir’s bail at $55,900 and appointed a public defender to represent him. A no-contact order was also put in place.

Freir, 24, is accused of punching and throwing the 30-year-old woman down during the dispute. He later returned and threatened her with the firearm, a Sandpoint Police report said.

Freir denied the firearm allegation when he was questioned by police, the report said.

Freir witnessed the shooting death of his stepbrother, Eli Holt, during a confrontation with James Matthew Anderson on Nov. 27, 2008. A Bonner County jury convicted Anderson of second-degree murder last month.

Anderson, 29, is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 19, 2010.
