Host of Top Dogs secure titles at home meet
SANDPOINT — Twenty-three Top Dogs earned hardware at the North Idaho Wrestling League’s Team Championships, held last Saturday at Sandpoint Middle School.
With more than 400 kindergarten through eighth graders in the field, the Top Dogs advanced 15 wrestlers to the championship round. Dean Ramey and Casey Randles, who both captured their fourth title in as many weeks, were joined by SMS wrestlers Adam Wendl and Jonathon McCormick atop the podium.
First-year wrestler Casey Oleson, who has come up just short in previous tournaments, scraped his way to an impressive second-place finish.
The Top Dogs will conclude their season at the Panhandle Championships, scheduled for Dec. 5 at Post Falls Middle School.
n 1st Place — Dean Ramey, Casey Randles, Jonathan McCormick and Adam Weindel.
n 2nd Place — Sam Becker, Casey Olesen, Braden Payne, Mason Bangeman, Brock Kluver, Scout Nash, Tanner Kohal, Owen Stebbins, Zach Alamillo, Colton Muldoon and Tyler Brown.
n 3rd Place — Scott McCabe, Dominic Chabiel, Mahonri Hunsaker, Hyrum Hunsaker, Patrick Kummer, Isaac Johnson , Jordan Beyers and David Gemmrig.
n Gonzaga wins Maui title, beats Cincinnati in OT
LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Robert Sacre scored 14 points and Gonzaga won the Maui Invitational for the first time in three tries, beating Cincinnati 61-59 in overtime Wednesday night at the Lahaina Civic Center.
Steven Gray and Elias Harris added 13 points apiece for Gonzaga (5-1).
The Bulldogs, who also got 12 points from Demetri Goodson, overcame a 10-point second-half deficit and sent the game to overtime after Sacre hit a floater in the lane with 16 seconds to play in regulation. Sacre then blocked Cincinnati’s alley-oop attempt at the buzzer.
The Bearcats (4-1) looked weary in overtime, missing five of seven free throws in the first 1:45 while falling behind by two.
