Wampus Cat boys getting defensive this eason

CLARK FORK — A quickstriking offense, lots of full court pressing and a stifling in-your-face man defense will be the hallmarks of this year’s Clark Fork boys basketball team.

The change in philosophy from the past couple years stems mostly from the fact the Wampus Cats have no height, and head coach Melvin Speelmon tailored his strategy to suit his shorter personnel.

“The only way to win will be to play good defense every night,” said Speelmon, in his second season leading the Cats. “It’s all we’ve been working on.”

Sophomore Stillman Berkley will carry the load offensively, looking to build off last season, when he emerged as a dangerous threat from beyond the arc. Speelmon said he’s improved quite a bit on the defensive end from last year.

Senior Chaunce Nesbitt and brother Nate Nesbitt bring athleticism and experience to the floor. Speelmon thinks the two could have big years.

“Chaunce can go off any time he wants for double figures,” said Speelmon, adding that Nate is more mature after quarterbacking the football team. “He learned a lot more about discipline on the court.”

Although not very tall, Howard Katzenberg is a powerful physical presence down low, so much so that Speelmon has dubbed the blocks “Howie’s House.”

“He’s build like a brick wall,” said Speelmon, calling him a rebounding machine. “He’s going to be in charge of the blocks.”

Also seeing minutes for the Cats will be senior Victor Walker, who had a surprising football season and is a maximum effort type of player, and junior D.J. Jackson, who will handle the point guard duties.

The Cats open the season tonight against 3A Bonners Ferry. The JV game tips off at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7:30.
