Cats whip Knights

| October 2, 2009 9:00 PM

CLARK FORK — The Clark Fork Wampus Cats exacted a little bit of revenge, as well as showing how much they’ve improved, erasing the memory of a 30 point loss to Lakeside earlier in the season with a 52-16 thrashing of the Knights on Homecoming Friday night in Clark Fork.

Howard Katzenberg carried 26 times for 134 hard yards, rushing for four touchdowns and catching one to lead the rapidly improving Wampus Cats (1-4) to their first win of the year.

“Howard is a horse,” said Cats coach Brian Arthun. “We kept feeding him the rock and he kept grinding it out and breaking tackles. He’s a good one.”

Freshman Axel Anderson scored two touchdowns and quarterback Nate Nesbitt threw for two scores to complement Katzenberg, as the Cats offense was clicking.

Taylor Scott led a spirited defensive effort with two safeties, and Chaunce Nesbitt had an interception as the Cats defense held the Knigts to 42 fewer points in the second meeting of the season, after falling 52-28 on opening night.

“At the start of the year we struggled, but we told the kids to keep fighting and working on fixing the little things,” Arthun said. “We’ve been steadily progressing, but this was our breakout game. The guys came out for Homecoming with a lot of intensity and played their hearts out.”

Levi Dole hauled in a 36 yard catch from brother Garth Dole to put the Knights up 8-0 to start the game, then added a two yard run in the fourth quarter for his team’s only scores.

The win sets up a pivotal NSL showdown next Friday when the Wampus Cats travel to Mullan in a game that will go a long ways to determining who make the playoffs.”
