Powell leads Spartans past Badgers

| October 2, 2009 9:00 PM

PRIEST RIVER — It was a back and forth battle in the rain, but the Spartans (4-2, 1-1 IML) held on to beat Bonners Ferry 20-12 at their Homecoming game Friday night. Priest River senior runningback Greg Powell carried the ball 18 times for 110-yards rushing and scored all three of Priest Rivers’ touchdowns.

“Powell ran the ball well tonight, and after the first quarter I thought our offensive line blocked better,” said Spartan head coach Jared Hughes. “Our defense played awesome, only allowing 12 points.”

Ahead 14-12 with five minutes in the fourth quarter Powell put his team ahead by a more comfortable margin with a tackle-breaking 18-yard touchdown run.

Spartan senior Geoff Boncz made big plays all night on defense and none more so than a third down sack and fourth down rush that forced a Bonners Ferry interception to Priest River linebacker Jordan Willig.

Bonners Ferry (3-2, 1-1 IML) was led by their junior quarterback Taylor Tompke, who scored twice on the night.

Priest River plays at Kellogg next Friday while Bonners Ferry travels to Timberlake.
