Where was task force in attacks on Bush?

| October 10, 2009 9:00 PM

A recent incident here in Sandpoint has created a media frenzy and a variety of responses from the community. Matthew Hathaway, a local resident, just this past week admitted to placing some questionable posters on several public school properties. They depicted president Obama in a very negative light.

Now I’m not here to debate the incident. The actions of Mr. Hathaway will be debated by many and agreed upon by few. That’s the way it is in a democracy.

My concern is the response by the Bonner County Human Right’s Task Force. According to the Bee, the task force has condemned his actions. That’s their right. They further go on to say that, they are shocked and sickened by these acts of hatred, racism and disrespect toward our highest elected official. They are asking the school district to pursue criminal charges.

In the past 5-6 years, right here in Sandpoint,  I have noticed many bumper stickers, posters, newspaper editorials, political cartoons that portrayed our former president in a very negative, vulgar and mean-spirited fashion. Some of the bumper stickers I am referring to had the likeness of Bush with a bull’s eye over his face.  Some of the posters referred to him as a dictator in reference to the Patriot Act.  Where was the task force then? Nary a word from them, when the intended is a Republican.  What ever happened to “equality” for all? It’s so nice to know “we are all equal.”
