Walk to School Day is a great idea for all
I didn’t have it hard, growing up. Especially as getting to school is concerned. The bus stop, for a long time was just down the road before it was moved — all the way to the end of our driveway. Few excuses for not making it out the door in time to grab a seat on the bus when THAT happened.
We lived far enough out where walking to school wasn’t an option. However, it’s a pretty safe bet that my mom would have sent us out the door with a hug, kiss and a brown-bag lunch and sent us on our way if we had.
She might have had to drive us to a starting point but she would, most likely, taken part in the Walk to School Day events to encourage us to live healthy, active lives.
Locally, Walk to School Day is tomorrow. This year, 1,700 students in the Lake Pend Oreille School District are expected to take part in Oct. 7 event. Students who live with walking distance will gather at set meeting points while student who live further out will be dropped off at safe meeting spots so they can take part, too.
Walking groups are heading to Washington, Farmin-Stidwell and Kootenai elementaries, Sandpoint Middle School, Sandpoint Charter School and the Lake Pend Oreille Alternative High School.
The goal is to promote healthy activity and concern for the environment and safety — things we all can support, whether it’s for one day, one week or a lifetime.
Mom would be proud.
