War Memorial Field is beautiful the way it is

| October 26, 2009 9:00 PM

War Memorial Field is one of the most beautiful stadiums in America. I’ve grown up here, traveled many places, and I’ve never seen another place close to the beauty, character, and heart of War Memorial. Its beauty is based in its naturalness — not overly modernized, not overly techno-ed, not strip-malled. It strongly symbolizes our environment, uniqueness and community spirit.

We are in an economically depressed time. People are out of jobs — struggling to give themselves the necessities, hoping to come out stronger.  Is this the right time to spend $100,000 to $200,000 on a “computer screen?” Technology has brought wonderful advancements throughout the world, yet it has also chipped away at the true meaning of a local community and increased people’s desires “to beat the Joneses.” Right now, we should be concentrating on benefiting as much of our entire community as possible.

I’m sure there are many “more bang for your buck” examples, but what about an outdoor sports complex? We don’t have enough fields as it is, and there’s always a fight over them. A complex would not only cater to numerous local sports, but could also host competitions, bringing money into the community. Alone, a Jumbotron can’t do that.

As our community grows, we need be aware of retaining the environment, beauty and spirit we love. A Jumbotron will only negate the natural beauty that makes Memorial special, unique, and true to who we are as a community. A Jumbotron’s financial and aesthetic return is small compared to other community options.
