Jail ordered over vandalism incident

SANDPOINT — A Sandpoint teen is serving 90 days in jail for her part in a slew of graffiti which blemished public and private property earlier this year.

Jennifer Lynn Sharples was also ordered to pay nearly $4,800 in restitution and put on probation for two years, according to the terms of a sentence imposed by 1st District Judge John Patrick Luster on Monday.

Another 90 days of local incarceration hangs over Sharples’ head while she’s on probation. She was further ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.

A prison sentence of two to five years was suspended, according to court documents.

Sharples, 18, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting malicious injury to property. The charge rose to the felony level because the amount of damage exceeded $1,000.

Sharples was charged as the dust was settling in the case of Kyle Lee Jones, an accomplice whose crude handiwork turned up on the Bonner County Courthouse, Sandpoint City Hall, police vehicles, Lake Pend Oreille High School and a half-dozen businesses last February.

Sharples became ensnared in the case after a Sandpoint Police investigation revealed she drove Jones to a discount store to buy spray paint and then to the various locations where the vandalism was committed.

Jones, 21, pleaded guilty and was given a prison term of two to four years with retained jurisdiction, which qualified him for release after serving six months. He was released in August, court documents indicated.
