POST FALLS — Led by Christina Johnson’s eight service aces and an intense team demeanor, Sandpoint handled its business in the opening round of the 4A state volleyball tournament, sweeping Hillcrest 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19 Friday at Post Falls High School.

Piper Wahlin smashed 13 kills, Koko James added 18 set assists, Sam Buratto posted two blocks and Alissa Millard dug up 15 balls to lead the Bulldogs. Head coach Karen Alsager had high praise for the play of Millard, and for the powerful serving of Johnson, whom she described as serving rockets.

“They weren’t just aces, they were demoralizing the other team,” said Alsager. “They pulled five people back to try and stop her.”

In the second game, the Bulldogs faced a scrappy and slightly unorthodox Kuna team, adjusting nicely and posting a 25-18, 23-25, 26-16 and 25-19 win.

Wahlin had a match-high 20 kills, James added 23 set assists, Millard 19 digs and Buratto three blocks to pace the Bulldogs (28-4), who now turn their focus to today’s pivotal match against Bonneville.

“We’re looking forward to playing Bonneville, knowing that we have to be completely on our ‘A’ game to battle with them,” said Alsager. “It’s going to be intense.”

The match begins at noon, and the winner will advance to the finals and await the playback matches in the double-elimination format. The championship match is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.

n Priest River fell 25-14, 25-18 and 25-23 to Fruitland in the first round of the 3A tournament at Coeur d’Alene High School.
