Charvoz leads Bulldogs in rout of Vikings
SANDPOINT — The final score may have been Sandpoint 36, Middleton 14, but that hardly did justice to the one-sided nature of the Bulldogs’ nonleague win Friday night at Barlow Stadium.
Save for the opening drive and a meaningless late touchdown in the final minute, the Bulldogs (3-0) thoroughly dominated their southern opponent, reeling off 36 unanswered points at one point.
Quarterback Daniel Charvoz had a sensational night, completing 15-19 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns, and at least three of his incompletions were dropped passes. He threw many of his passes while on the run outside of the pocket, dropping them over defenders into the perfect spot.
“Outstanding game,” said Bulldogs head coach Mike Mitchell of his senior signal caller. “Good decisions, no turnovers, no bad balls, I’m really happy with how he played.”
On the receiving end of many of those strikes was Charvoz’s favorite target Mike Hubbard, who hauled in nine catches for 156 and three touchdowns, one coming on the final play of the first half.
For the third straight week, the defense was once again stout, no easy task against the throwback offense of Middleton (1-1), which basically had all 11 players in a tight box with tons of fakes and multiple handoffs. They marched down the field on the opening drive to take an 8-0 lead, before Sandpoint figured things out and began to shut down their ground attack.
If not for an overzealous officiating crew, the game could well have been a blowout. Sandpoint running back Cody Hecker had touchdown runs of 71 and 46 yards called back for penalties, and Ben Fisher’s nifty 91 yard punt return for a score was also called back.
“The kids played through adversity all night,” said Mitchell, alluding to the nullified touchdowns. “We would have been a very good football team.”
Hecker hauled in a 39 yard touchdown from Charvoz for the Bulldogs’ first score, trucking over a defender on the sideline and turning a screen pass into a touchdown. Hubbard caught two more scores to give Sandpoint a 19-8 lead heading into halftime.
Dillon Gingerich put the Bulldogs up 26-8 with a 67 yard catch and run, and Hubbard caught his third touchdown as the Bulldogs put up 14 points in the third quarter. Daniel Anderson would score Sandpoint’s final points on a 38 yard field goal, before Middleton scored a final touchdown against the Bulldogs’ second string defense.
Sophomore running back Anthony Gold brought some excitement to the game with a few eye-popping runs in the second half, leading the Bulldogs with 74 yards on just seven carries.
Sandpoint hosts Coeur d’Alene next Friday.
