Boat dock would hurt slough's wildlife

Dear Beth Reinhart:

About 25 years ago, we sold to the Idaho Department of Wildlife our property at the end of Denton Slough in Bonner County for the purpose of maintaining the habitat of the waterfowl in the slough, particularly the grebes, swans, ducks, and geese.

It has come to my attention that the Corps of Engineers is planning to construct at Denton Slough a boat dock along with parking lot and other facilities.  Worse yet, this project is about to begin with little or no public notice or public meeting, and perhaps there has not even been a study of the environmental impacts.

Certainly, boat activities in the slough will seriously affect the wildlife in the slough and nesting birds on the shores.

It is hard to believe that no one in your office is unaware of the provisions of the National Environmental Protection Act.  I can only conclude that the Corps too lazy to follow the required procedures of NEPA and is trying to sneak this project through without stirring up the natives.

Sorry.  It won’t work.  Among other things, copies of this letter are being forwarded to our senators and congressman.
