Program is something for area to be proud of

| September 14, 2009 9:00 PM

Sandpoint has a curbside recycling program to be proud of, at no cost to residents, and as Kristi Harrison mentioned in her article, it does include glass recycling. Details on Sandpoint curbside recycling are on Waste Management’s Web site at www.wmnorthwest.com/sandpoint/resrecycling.html.

Anything that goes into city residents’ trash cans is shipped 300 miles to the landfill in Arlington, Ore. The cost of that in 2008 was over $1 million, paid by county residents via property taxes. Curbside recycling kept about 270 tons of recyclables out of the landfill last year. With more participation in the free curbside recycling, that could easily be doubled.

Anyone interested in attending Sandpoint Transition Initiative waste less working group meetings is welcome. Meeting and contact information can be found at www.sandpointtransitioninitiative.org/ under “working groups.”
