Letter writer was incorrect

| September 27, 2009 9:00 PM

On Sunday, Sept. 13, your publication printed a letter to the editor in which the writer asserted that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to construct a boat dock, parking lot and other facilities at Denton Slough.

Let me assure your readers that the Corps of Engineers is not planning any construction in the Denton Slough area.

However, the corps recently did receive a permit application from a private landowner to construct a fixed dock. In this instance, the corps’ responsibility is to make sure the proposed plan is in line with the public interest and doesn’t impede navigation.

The corps will prepare an environmental assessment and address public and agency comments before making a permit decision, which can have one of three outcomes — approve, deny or approve with conditions.

We would encourage any of your readers who have questions or concerns regarding this or any other regulatory issue involving the corps to give our local Regulatory office a call at (208) 765-7440.
