Anthony gem leads Bulldogs past Tigers
SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Patrick Anthony pitched another complete game gem, throwing a five-hitter and striking out nine to lead Sandpoint to a hard-fought 4-2 win in nonleague baseball action Thursday at Timberlake High School.
Anthony didn’t rattle after the Tigers (4-3) tied the game with a home run in the 6th inning, returning to pick up the win after the Bulldogs (4-3) scored twice in the top half of the seventh inning.
“He didn’t give up the bases; made them (Timberlake) swing the bats,” said Sandpoint head coach Chris Young of Anthony, who was coming off a one-hit, 12 strikeout performance against St. Maries. “After the home run, a lot of pitchers would have folded, and he didn’t. The boys came through in the last inning to get him the W.”
Nick Halpin’s RBI single proved to be the winning run, and the Tigers would commit all three of their errors in the bottom of the seventh to help Sandpoint score once more.
Tevin Hamilton and Anthony hit RBI singles in the second to stake the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead.
Derek Tymesen hit a leadoff home run deep over the center field fence in the sixth to tie the game.
Young liked his team’s improvement executing the hit and runs and bunting, and felt they eliminated some of the technical errors that had plagued them early in the season.
Sandpoint is at Lakeland on Tuesday.
