Kalispell Bay boat launch closes for reconstruction

| April 20, 2010 9:00 PM

PRIEST LAKE — The Kalispell Bay boat launch is closed through June 30 for reconstruction and improvement work, according to Priest Lake deputy district ranger DeWayne Thornburgh.

The boat launch will be open in July and August and then closed again beginning Sept 7 for the remainder of the fall.

This closure will allow reconstruction work at the boat launch which includes a new overflow parking lot on the west side of the Lakeshore Road and repaving of the existing roads and parking areas within the existing site, Thornburgh said. In addition there will be an additional ramp and dock added to the actual boat launch area.

“We are excited to get this contract started this spring and finish up in the fall,” he said. “Although this project will create some minor inconveniences this coming summer the new facility will provide additional parking and improved boat launching capability.”

Contractors began working on several parts of the boat launch Monday and will be working through June to ensure that the facility is open and functional for July and August.

“Some portions of the facility may appear rough but it will be open for the two busy months during the summer,” Thornburgh said. “Once the Labor Day weekend is over, Kalispell Boat Launch will be closed again so work can continue this fall until the project is completed.”

The Kalispell Bay Boat Launch is a primary access point for launching boats into Priest Lake and those accessing Bartoo and Kalispell Islands for day use or overnight camping.  During the closure, camping fees should be deposited in one of several fee tubes located on Kalispell and Bartoo islands. Campers will not be able to pay for camping fees at the Kalispell Bay Boat Launch during the construction periods.
