Avalanche end season in style with shutouts

| August 4, 2010 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — The North Idaho Avalanche U18 boy’s soccer team competed in the River City Cup in Spokane this past weekend, and led by some top notch goaltending, finished off the final two games of the summer season with shutouts.

Goalkeeper Kanyen Bauer came up big in both games, posting shutouts in a 3-0 win over the River City Rapids and a 2-0 win over the River City Steelers after falling to tournament runner up Idaho Thunder in the first round.

In the win over the Steelers, the Avalanche got goals from Andre Zarate and Lane Smith. Smith then provided the assist to Zarate and Jeff Rokstad provided the assist to Smith.

The defense for the two shutouts was anchored by the stellar play of Spencer Hanson, Taran Loper, Harrison Reasor, Cordell Reed and Peik Wahl. Offensively, the midfield possession game of Andrew Bare, Jeremiah Gagnon, Raleigh Hanson and Jeff Rokstad caused the opponents to tire early.

Kyle Lamson scored two goals in the win over the Rapids, with Gerhart Suppiger adding the other. The assists were provided by Reed, Smith and Wahl.

Reasor scored off a beautiful header to the far post off a cross from Zarate, for one of the only highlights from the loss to the Thunder.

All of the Avalanche players are now ready to compete for spots with their local high schools, and then compete against one another for bragging rights. The team will start back up in November, looking to travel to a western state tournament.
