Helmet helped save bicycle rider's life

| August 17, 2010 9:00 PM

In response to Mr. Reinhardt’s letter dated Aug. 1, I whole-heartedly agree.

I broke my neck two years ago riding my bike. I hit a dog, went over my bars and landed on my head. I was off work for five months recovering.

Cruiser bikes are so popular these days and you see them everywhere but nobody is wearing helmets. You never know when it can happen and the consequences are severe. I’m not sure where the idea came that you don’t need a helmet on a cruiser. When you hit the pavement, it still hurts.

The day I broke my neck, I didn’t have a feeling it was going to be a bad day and I should wear my helmet, it’s automatic.

Don’t be a hypocrite, Mom and Dad, make the kids wear theirs and be a good example and wear yours. Don’t worry about your hair, take a hat. I see some of the owners of the bike shops not wearing helmets and I am very confused. They know the dangers and it is an added sale. I was lucky, without my helmet I would either be dead or paralyzed.  Be smart — wear a helmet.
